Amazon.com Product Description
Small but mighty, the HP 2133 Mini-Note PC (model KR922UT) offers you a full-function laptop that weighs just 2.8 pounds. Designed to go where you go without weighing you down, it's perfect for young students in your home, and robust enough to handle demanding business applications for road warriors. Despite its size, it features an 8.9-inch scratch-resistant display with a WXGA resolution and a nearly full-size keyboard (92 percent). A durable all-aluminum case encompasses the top and bottom of the notebook, while an internal magnesium alloy support structure helps protect sensitive components from damage.

The HP Mini-Note features a simple, refined design and anodized aluminum shell that is sleek and sturdy yet lightweight. See a larger view of all the external ports.

The HP DuraKeys have a clear coating applied over the notebook keyboard to protect the finish and printed letters and characters.
It's powered by the VIA C7-M ULV processor, which provides a 1.0 GHz clock speed and excellent power management capabilities. And because it uses solid state hard drive memory instead of a spinning hard disk drive (with 4 GB of storage), the Mini-Note is optimal for weathering rough handling and sharing space in overstuffed bags. Other features include 512 MB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), 54g Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11b/g), lightning quick Gigabit Ethernet, VGA webcam built into the screen's bezel for video chats, and up to 2.25 hours of battery life. This model comes pre-installed with the SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 operating system.

The Basics

  • Processor: The VIA C7-M ULV (ultra-low voltage) processor has a 1.0 GHz speed, 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and a 128 KB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

Operating at an average power of less than 1W, the VIA C7-M ULV processor is the embodiment of cool processing and sets the standard for next generation low power mobile and personal electronics systems. It also features VIA PowerSaver technology that further reduces power consumption by dynamically adjusting the frequency and the voltage of the VIA C7-M ULV processor as the system requires. This innovative technology can reduce power consumption by as much as 50 percent while still ensuring seamless mobile operation.

  • Hard Drive: This model of the HP Mini-Note offers 4 GB of solid-state flash memory (NAND) storage, which is adequate for students and those who want to use the Mini-Note primarily as an email and web surfing device. Faster and more reliable, flash memory provides a rapid boot-up and quicker access to applications while improving battery life. Flash memory is also more reliable than hard disk memory, mainly because there are no moving parts. Since data is written to stationary flash memory instead of a spinning hard disk, you have less risk of hardware problems with the hard disk when you're on the move. It's an ideal feature for a travel notebook where knocks and sudden movements are par for the course.

  • Memory: The 512 MB of installed RAM (1 x 512 MB, PC2-5300) offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed. This notebook has a maximum capacity of 2 GB of RAM.

  • DVD/CD Drive: The HP 2133 Mini-Note PC does not include an integrated optical drive, but HP offers optional drives that connect to the Mini-Note using the optional HP External MultiBay II.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: The spill-resistant keyboard is 92 percent of full size, 101/102-key compatible with isolated inverted-T cursor control keys, both left and right control and alt keys, 12 function keys, and hotkey combinations for audio volume, power conservation, brightness, and other features. It also features HP DuraKeys, which have a clear coating applied over the keyboard to protects the finish and printed letters and characters. The touchpad includes a scroll zone and two soft-touch buttons.
Screen, Video & Audio
The 8.9-inch display has a 1280 x 768-pixel resolution, for native 720p high-resolution clarity, and the Mini-Note includes a VGA output for connecting to an external monitor or projector. Video is powered by the integrated Via Chrome 9 video/graphics card, and it includes an integrated high-definition audio card for crisp sound via the internal 2-watt stereo speakers.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
This notebook has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. You also get super-fast wired connectivity via the Gigabit Ethernet port (10/100/1000). The Mini-Note also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (replacing the PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. And it offers a Secure Digital memory card slot for downloading pictures and videos from your digital camera, or filling up a card for your MP3 player. It includes the following ports:

  • 2 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 ExpressCard/54 slot (also supports ExpressCard/34)
  • 1 Secure Digital memory card slot
  • 1 headphone/line-out and 1 microphone
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 RJ-45 for 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity

Operating System
The open source platform SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 operating system offers an easy-to-learn interface that's robust enough to handle enterprise-grade business tools. It provides a familiar graphical interface with features like application tiling that provides a snapshot of what you're using, alt-tabbing that gives thumbnail views of open applications, and a 3-D spinning cube that increases your workspace size. And the SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop OS was designed to easily coexist with other operating systems--it connects seamlessly to Microsoft Active Directory, runs Novell GroupWise and Lotus Notes, and connects to GroupWise, Lotus Domino, and Microsoft Exchange servers.

It comes with the OpenOffice suite of office applications, which enables you to open, edit and create documents, presentations, spreadsheets and databases that are compatible with Microsoft Office. Other software includes Evolution Email, Evince Document Viewer, OpenOffice Draw, F-Spot Photo Browser, Gnome CD/DVD Creator, Helix Banshee Music Player, Real Player 10 media player, Firefox web browser, Gaim Instant Messenger, Gnome FTP file transfer, and Liferea RSS feed reader.

Dimensions & Weight
This notebook measures 10.04 x 6.5 x 1.05 inches and weighs 2.8 pounds.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!   September 14, 2008

I've had my mini for a few days now and absolutely love it.

I have been looking at umpcs for a while now. When Dell came out with there mini, I immediately placed an order for the Linux version. The next day, I canceled it. As attractive as an SSD drive is, I'll wait until >128GB is cost effective.

What initially got me looking into these was the desire to have something small to bring with me when on vacation. Lugging around my Dell 17" laptop isn't fun.

Pros:
* Small - easy to carry around, even with the large battery
* Awesome resolution - 1280x768. Others in this class only provide 1024x600. In this day of widescreen LCDs, I don't want to have to scroll back and forth in a browser like it's 1990.
* 120GB 7200rpm hard drive (specs here state 5400rpm)
* Surprisingly good sound quality
* Keyboard is easy to type on after spending some time getting used to it. What was Dell thinking when they designed theirs?

Cons:
* Runs HOT. Don't use this on your lap!
* Pain in the you-know-what to install XP without a USB DVD drive (you have to create the image from an XP or Windows NT system). Linux was a breeze and allows you to re-size an existing partition.
* Via processor. It's not bad, but I'd rather have an Intel Atom CPU

This comes with Vista Business. I use Vista Ultimate exclusively on my PCs and 17" laptop (I'm a C#/C++ developer), so I used it for a day. Vista isn't really the best choice for an ultra-portable. It works, but wasn't quite as snappy as it could be, even after tweaking.

So, since I was going to dual boot Ubuntu anyway, I wiped it clean and installed XP, Office 2007, and all my usual day to day stuff, excluding my development software and CPU-hungry apps like Photoshop. Now it runs more to my satisfaction.

I brought this to work on Friday and everybody gathered around and ooohed and ahhhed over it.

In a nutshell, this is a fantastic ultra portable if you don't do anything too CPU demanding on it (this applies to all of them with the exception of the fantastically expensive Sony). These aren't made for gaming or developing. They're made for day-to-day tasks like email, IM, watching movies, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for what it is   May 22, 2008

I've had the computer for about a month now, and I couldn't be happier with it. Here's how I would address the complaints:

Performance: Use Linux or XP. Vista is usable, but this machine sings with XP. If you don't have a spare XP license or don't feel like spending $50 for one, go ahead and load SUSE Desktop.

CPU: I'm not sure what people mean by "underpowered". Sure, the intel chips are faster at similar clock speeds, but the user experience (on XP) is almost identical between the Eee PC (at 900MHz) and the 2133 (at 1.2 GHz)... the Eee pc would buckle under Vista, too. (though I realize putting Vista on there in the first place is a huge mistake by HP).

Heat: It does get warm. So does my Powerbook :)

I'm running OpenOffice 2.0 on it, and it's great. Youtube, Pandora, Skype webcam, and other web tasks are fine. DivX movies run great.

I wanted a small computer for my daughter, and the Eee PC was a little too "toy-like". I didn't want her learning to type on a dinky keyboard, so she'll have to relearn on a full size keyboard later. The screen is gorgeous. The hard drive has plenty of room, and I store lots of DivX video on there. The speakers are better than most laptop speakers (of any size) I've heard.

Other kid-safe features: the 3D Driveguard, and a spill-proof keyboard.

So in short, this is one heck of a computer for $549. If you really need a desktop replacement, Sony will be happy to sell you their version for $2000 :)

5 out of 5 stars Great build, wrong OS   July 30, 2008

I bought the HP2133 together with my wife, as we always had to share one laptop. So now the HP2133 is solely for her usage. Anyway, we went for the model with the Suse linux pre-installed (is cheaper, and Windows XP and VISTA are not the best choices for a low spec machine like this, be warned), honestly as a linux fan I have to say that this particular Suse linux version is not good... at all. Fonts look terrible, and the OS is incomplete. Unlike the much better new openSUSE 11 linux with GNOME.

Anyway, for those of you who are reading these reviews of the HP2133 in order to decide whether to buy one, my advise is this;

In my personal opinion the build of this little machine is absolute great. Its sturdy, looks stylish and professional and the outer side is made of metal... no cheap plastic. Unlike most of the other mini laptops on the market. Storage space is very good, processor is a bit slow, but fine if you just want to do some office work, emailing, browsing, watching Youtube clips/movies and such. BUT... install a lightweight linux version. My recommendation is to install Xubuntu, which is a very nice looking, lightweight (and that is VERY important on a simple machine like this), userfriendly linux version. (very suitable for first time linux/pc users) It has all necessary programs, such as for office work etc included... and its 100 % free and legal. (open source software)

Simply follow the instructions here to install:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/HP2133 (scroll down to "How-To: Installing Ubuntu 8.04.1 from CD on the HP 2133 Mini-Note"

and you will be up and running in no time. Hope the above information will be helpful. Thank you for reading.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent device after some tweaks   October 25, 2008

I have the KX869AT model, which comes with SLED 10. However standby/suspend wasn't working initially. Looking at http://www.hp2133guide.com/forums/, I found the location on HP's site to download a BIOS update - applying that solved standby/suspend issues. I also changed the configuration to Ubuntu 8.04 and XP (dual boot), which really helped with the user experience. Ubuntu took some work to get going (there is a great Ubuntu install guide available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/HP2133) but it was worth it - it works very well.

The device is really well designed and looks elegant. Typing on the keyboard is as good as a regular laptop, the touchpad (after adjustments) works very well, and the whole device just shows great build quality. I haven't seen any extraordinary heat/noise problems and get about 2 hours of battery life (w/WiFi on) with the 3-cell battery. I am very happy with my purchase for sure.

5 out of 5 stars Hands down the best hardware for a netbook. SW needed modding   November 11, 2008
H. M. Jones (SC, USA)
6 out of 6 found this review helpful

Linux users please read this! And if you're a Windows user willing to try something different *cough* better, read on...

I bought the KX869AT, 1.2 GHz with SUSE Linux Enterprise. First, the hardware you get from HP is absolutely unrivaled. I saw a few netbooks in electronics stores after I bought this and they don't come close to the quality of the HP 2133. Everything is business class. It's amazing how much keyboard you get in such a small package. The case is tough and does a decent job of hiding fingerprints. Some may not prefer the reflective screen, I like it. The 1280x768 resolution is unmatched. My take on the heat issue is it doesn't get any hotter than a normal laptop. The buttons on either side of the touchpad is easy to get used to. So, for the price, you are getting an awesome piece of equipment.

Now the OS and software is a different story. The 5 star rating is conditional... let me explain. I'm a regular Linux user, preferring Gentoo. So SLED didn't frighten me. I knew if I didn't like it I could install the flavor of my choice. And that's exactly what happened. Two problems - if you aren't familiar with SLED package management and used to emerge, apt-get or RPM, you're gonna hate it. I tried my best for 2 days to use their restrictive updating system. It's not worth it. Second, like other reviewers, I lost wireless functionality as soon as I did a software update. Thanks to the gentleman who pointed out this Ubuntu install guide, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/HP2133, I was up and running with a fully functional computer in a few hours! Everything works flawlessly. Only thing I have left to test is the webcam. So, like I said, this baby gets 5 stars on the condition that SLED is replaced with Ubuntu. Bottom line, buy this HP netbook. You won't regret it.
