5 out of 5 stars This is exactly what I wanted   March 11, 2007

I backup all of my DVDs onto my hard drive as AVIs. I DVR Television into MPEGs. But I do not want to watch everything in front of my computer. I saw the MediaLounge and thought I would give it a chance... After about 7 minutes of setup, I got the thing working off of my 802.11g wireless network, and streaming media straight to my television. OMG I love this thing...

I have head it for about 3 weeks now and enjoy watching my media through it. It plays 99% of the files I own, it looks georgous, and it is far better than swapping DVDs in and out of a player. I read some of the other reviews, and I don't know why they had issues... If you know your way around a computer, this is a no brainer. I have saved all of my TV Series onto my hard drives, and no longer have to search through a rack of DVD cases!

The Good:
Very easy to setup.
I got the DSM-520 from Best buy few days ago. It took me about 10 minutes to have it setup.
I do not want to sound a genius but it was very straightforward.
First you need to install the software that came on the cd that search media files "Video, Music, Photo," on your HD.
After this is done then you need to setup the media center.
A lot of reviews had issues on the wireless connection but this actually was the easy part. Well easy if you have a laptop or a pc with a wireless connection. To make it very easy if you have a win xp with service pack 2 installed what you you go to Start/All Programs/Accessories/Communications/Wireless network Setup Wizard.
It's very simple. To have this kind of setup you need to have a thumb drive what it does it stores all the wireless information like the SSID the security key and so on and it stores them in to the thumb drive. After the setup data is on the thumb drive remove it and plug the thumb drive to the DSM-520.
Turn on the media player and it will soon recognize the thumb drive and it will also say that it found a wireless info on it. Click next and you are done.
After the wireless is done and your pc has been updated with the software that came with the dlink cd you are good to go.
The picture quality is very good I used the s-video on my TV.
The entire movie collection that I have I re-encoded to avi and the picture quality it's fantastic.
The bad:
Nothing to say about it stands on what the item says.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Product (if you read directions)   November 17, 2007

Bought one a few months ago and bought another for a second room within a week - it's that great!

As with a few other posters, my usage is almost strictly for a video library. With more than 500 movies and at least as many TV series discs my DVD collection was hard to keep straight. After converting them to avi I can now pic, choose and play ANYTHING without digging through boxes, cases or shelves.

Here are my recommended requirements:
- Do you know what XVID, DIVX, MPEG or MP4 are? Are you willing to learn?

- Do you have a good wireless / hardwire network?

- Do you have a lot of avi, mpeg, mp4 or DVD video?

- Can you read instructions?

If you can answer 'yes' to those questions, this just might be the media player for you. Photo / music playback gets an 8.5-9.0 out of 10. HD video users will definitely want a hardwire network, but 802.1g works great for my avi's.

The only drawback I've seen is playing DIVX-3 files can be a bit choppy. Those I just re-rip to XVID.

Oh, last thing - look into TVersity (free) as a server software instead of the one that comes with the unit.

5 out of 5 stars For watching HD video - this is the best!   April 10, 2006

There have been several mixed reviews for this unit for people looking to do very specific things or with very specific setup issues.

I wanted to post a review to say that this box works beautifully with its key functionality and is one of the best purchases I have made in a while.

I have it setup plugged into my network through wired ethernet (it did work via wireless, but I think the wired is more consistant considering its location) and am using a Maxtor Shared Storage drive as a media server.

I can go through the folders on my drive and find videos to watch very easily. They start playing quickly and play consistantly. I am outputting via component at 720p and the image is beautiful.

The unit properly displays HD video in wide screen and the pause/fast forward/rewind all work great. I use the optical audio and it works great plugged into my surround system.

Simply - it works. If you want to watch videos from your computer/drive in high quality on television it works great and is a perfect addition to a home theatre system.

I took it out of the box, plugged it into my entertainment system, loaded the software on my CPU, and started watching videos that were stored on my CPU without burning 100,000 DVDs.

I am not sure if they have updated the software or something because I didnt have any problems that these other people have. As of now I am only using it for video, and it works amazingly. If I decide to use the photo and music option I will add-on, but for music I use my ipod and connect to receiver and photos i watch from my CPU screen.

The video quality is also amazing, wireless hookup hardly ever has problems. If I am using the internet and downloading a bunch of files than there are some times the video slow-motions, but its my fault because im making my internet do too much.

One bad thing I found was that if you mistakenly hit a button and skip the rest of the video you were watching the fastforwarding and rewinding take FOREVER to get back to your spot. So I might investigate and think about making my videos have chapters every 5/10 minutes but honestly, this is the only big drawback I found of this product.

If you download video and dont want to put it on dvd to watch on tv, BUY THIS PRODUCT!
