5 out of 5 stars LIFE is like a box of chocolates....you never know what's next   September 17, 2007

Despite the Monk-like, strange habits exhibited by the Cop-turned-Prisoner-turned-Detective, Charlie, the story provided an excellent synopsis for a cop trying to recapture what he had and then some, while secretly solving his past. I'll give a few more episodes before making any solid commentments, but LIFE is so far, so good.

I hadn't heard too much about this show (I don't really watch NBC) and wouldn't have even given it a second look if not for the free downloads here on Amazon. I almost didn't bother watching it even with that because a couple of the others free downloads that I watched before were not worth the 43 minutes I invested in them. However, this show looks like it could be great.

The characters have superb potential (you never get 100% in a pilot) and the quirky main character, Charlie Crews, is so different and interesting from the run-of-the-mill cop show. He has the same loveable appeal (for different reasons, of course) as Greggory House, Bobby Goren, and Adrian Monk.

The plot is grabbing (if you enjoy this genre, which I usually do). It appears the writers will tease the viewers throughout the season with an occasional hint at a larger thread about the "conspiracy" that sent him away in the first place, while still showing strong stand alone episodes.

While this show is a drama, there are several humorous moments, mostly dealing with Charlie trying to adjust to the idea of modern technology. Aside from the obvious humor of someone trying to figure out their cell phone and learn internet jargon, there is also an ironic humor from Charlie's zen philosophy of living in the "now" when now is so alien to him. (Maybe I am looking at this too deep, but it struck me as clever.)

Again, I had no plans to tune in to this show before watching, thank you Amazon and NBC for introducing me to what promises to be a worthwhile program!

A cop who gets framed and becomes a millionaire for being wrongly accused. The cast is phenomenal. I love the main guy. Weird, but fascinating. Highly recommend this show.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal start to a (hopefully) great show   September 12, 2007

I honestly hadn't thought twice about this show until I saw it on the Unbox downloads. Since it was free, I thought "Hey, why not?" I am so glad I watched it - what a great pilot!! If it is indicative at all of how the show will go, I'll be a devoted follower.

The acting was incredible, great cast rapport and really fantastic writing. I was involved in the show the entire length of the episode, and found myself becoming truly involved with the characters. Lewis bring immediate personality and depth to the character of Charlie Crews, and Sarah Shahi shows complexity as his reluctant assigned partner, Dani Reese. Already these actors are showing incredible versatility and range, and this is just the pilot!

I'm really excited to see where Crews investigations of his own framing take him. After suffering for 12 years in a maximum security prison for a crime he didn't commit, he's got some accounts to settle. Should be good TV!

5 out of 5 stars Lewis, as usual, hits it out of the park!   September 15, 2007

Well, anyone who knows anything about the lead actor in this series, Damian Lewis, knows that he has incredible talent and that he ALWAYS keeps his audience glued to the screen (just watch him in Band of Brothers, The Forsyte Saga, Keane - the man never gives a non-riveting performance!). In "Life" he brings no less to the table. It's a difficult role to play, I'd imagine. He (as Detective Charlie Crews) is endearingly eccentric, quietly big-hearted, physically and emotionally scarred after spending 12 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, and tough-as-nails when it comes to solving crime and taking down the bad guys. It's a complex character, alright, but one in which Lewis seamlessly melds the conflicting emotions. Plus, he's sexy and extremely good-looking! Who could ask for more, ladies? As for his co-star, Sarah Shahi (playing Crews' partner, Dani Reese), she does an excellent job portraying an overly cynical, by-the-book cop who doesn't think she can handle Crews and his unorthodox ways, at first. By the end of the pilot, however, it's evident that her "ice queen" persona is already softening towards a man whom she realizes takes "having her back" very seriously. The ending sequences hooked me - very compelling. I'm looking forward to the season!
